Kokkola Opera received the Award for Art 2008 from the Finnish Government on
the 15th of May, 2008. The 15 000€ Award is given for important artistic
work during the last 3 years. Kokkola Opera has received this award very
quickly, having produced only festival summers. The founding members of the
organisation are Anu Komsi (Artistic Director), Sakari Oramo (Conductor),
Annika Mylläri (Managing Director) and Robert McLoud (opera singer). The
basis for the award were innovative and creative productions of the Marriage
of Figaro 2006-2007 and die Fledermaus 2007-2008. |

CBSO conductor Sakari Oramo was named Cultural Figure of the Year by the Birmingham Post in February of 2008. The Finnish conductor embarked on his final season as music director of the orchestra, earning acclaim for his contributions to Elgar's 150th celebrations with an outstanding performance of the Dream of Gerontius, and also a revelatory performance of the Apostles at the Proms. |

Finnish Cultural Foundation/Central Ostrobothnia awarded soprano Anu Komsi with Central Ostrobothnia Cultural Award 2008. The 10 000€ award was handed to Komsi on Thursday, the 10th of April at the Foundations annual Grants and Awards seremony in Kälviä. Komsi was awarded for her work in "The World of Singing". Komsi is also the Artistic Director of Kokkola Opera. |

Kokkola Opera has commissioned a new opera from the composer Sebastian Fagerlund. Libretto to the 1809-theme opera will be written by Jusa Peltoniemi. World Premiere will take place the 1st of August, 2009 at the Kokkola Opera Summer festival and will visit Stockholms Concert Hall in September 2009. Further touring is being planned. |
